Vintage Indian Village
Builder advertisements for the various homes within the Indian Village Tract
Vintage Indian Village
This neighborhood is made up of homes constructed over a period of many years; from the mid-1950's until early 1960's. My dad purchased in 1962 from the builder. He used his VA like many young home buyers did back then. The builders advertised heavily to veterans and active service members. Indian Village, after all, is in close proximity to Long Beach and its ports. These were small, affordable homes for families on a budget.
There were various builders, and the neighborhood did not go by the name "Indian Village" until about the mid-1960's. Indian Village Park (now named Margie L. Rice Park) opened in about 1966. I remember my whole elementary school class from Sequoia walking to the opening of the park as a field trip. Here you will find advertising of the original neighborhoods. Check the prices!
To the left is an ad from a Long Beach newspaper from 1955. It is advertising the newly-built Hazelwood Freedom Homes. These are the homes built mostly in the northeast section of the neighborhood, originally built with no garage, just a carport which they included in the square footage in this advertisement.
Below is a more descriptive advertisement from the Real Estate section of the same newspaper from December 1955. The builder was making it very attractive to Vets.

To the right is a large ad for the "Homewood Park" development. Advertisement is from a Long Beach newspaper, circa June 1958. This builder is also trying to grab the attention of Veterans. These homes were more expensive but had garages. Note how all the model homes were accessed off Garden Grove Boulevard (7th Street). They were built prior to the 405 going through.
Below are a couple more ads with more verbiage, detailing and highlighting the attributes of the homes. Both from 1958.

Below are ads for the iconic two-story homes of Indian Village, the "Southmoor Village" development. These are from 1958.
